Mom’s Fury at Airbnb Owner’s ‘Inappropriate’ Request While Enjoying a Getaway

When you stay in someone else’s house there are naturally going to be some rules to follow.

It’s a fairly standard procedure for homeowners to have strict rules about whether you take your shoes off at the door or ask to remove the linens before you leave.

And while they can be overwhelming, they are often (rather) reasonable requests – however, sometimes they are not.

The mirror pays off that a mom enjoying a week away was not impressed by the odd request to water 10 hanging baskets twice a day, despite the owner living next door.

She uploaded the request to Mumsnet, asking if she was acting unreasonably by not doing so, as she explained that they had a busy schedule during their getaway.

The chalet has 10 hanging baskets outside

The woman wrote: “Vacationing in a cottage through Airbnb and it cost a lot of money for a week.

“The owner lives right next to us and takes care of her horses which are at the bottom of our garden twice a day.

“Left a note on the kitchen table asking us to water the 10 huge hanging baskets on the cottage walls twice a day, which involves taking the hose out of the garage to do this.

“We use the chalet as a base for traveling around this part of the country on day trips. We leave early and return late.

“Am I being unreasonable not to water the baskets and let him know (politely) that we won’t?”

“She’s here twice a day to take care of the horses. I’m here on vacation, we dine out every night to give me a break from domestic chores for the past 18 months !!

“I’m not about to start watering someone else’s plants when I’m barely doing mine at home !!

“She asked for honest and constructive feedback at the end of our stay, would you say something along the lines that it is inappropriate to ask guests to do this?

“I’m going to tell him tomorrow that we haven’t had a chance to do this so they don’t die elsewhere.”

Her fellow Mumsnet users agreed that this was an unreasonable request, with one responding, “You’re on vacation, she can water her own bloody plants.”

Another joked, “I would do it personally, but I would charge him a daily rate for doing it. Find out what a local gardener would charge.”

A third wrote: “Absolutely not a chance in hell. You go on vacation to relax and recharge your batteries, don’t do someone else’s chores !!

But others felt that it was better to do it yourself than to have the owner visit the house twice a day.

“I’d much rather do it than leave it lying around. Twice a day seems a bit excessive though, mine thrives once a day,” one person wrote.

Another added: “I would, it’s not much to ask and the owner asked nicely, to be honest she looks lovely.”
