Mother Hubbard’s new restaurant will open in Birmingham and offer fish & chips for just 45p

A chip shop opens in Birmingham with a very tasty offer on opening day. Yorkshire brand Mother Hubbard’s opens its latest outlet on the A38 Kingsbury Road in Erdington this Saturday June 25. The new venue, near the junction with Burcote Road, hopes to entice customers with a very tempting offer – fish AND chips for just 45p.

The chain’s first store was opened in Ingleby Road, Bradford, on 3 May 1972 by Stan and Hilda Ogden of Coronation Street, aka Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander. And in his 50’se year it repeats opening day prices of just 45p for the first 1,000 customers.

The place uses Icelandic haddock and British potatoes for its fries. It also sells a range of other fish options, including new fiery or spicy fish and chips, grilled fish, and fish or chip butties. And fried favorites like pies and pastries, fishcakes, sausages and breaded sausages.

There are also chicken nuggets or strips and fish cakes for the kids and chicken bites, mozzarella dips and battered fries. Also on offer are chip shop staples, pea mash, curry sauce and even gravy, reflecting its Nordic roots.

The 45p opening day offer is expected to attract a number of visitors and represents a considerable saving of £8.30 on the regular price of £8.75 for fish and chips. Site manager Chris Thornton said: “It took us six months to open this site. The 45p offer takes the price back to what fish and chips was in 1972 and will be available to the first 1,000 customers.

“From other stores where we have done this, we expect customers to queue in the afternoon. The brand is doing very well.”

He added: “We’ve had a good response and have been closing the shutters for the past 10 days as we prepare to open. What sets us apart are the ingredients – Icelandic haddock and dishes like our fish masala.

“I’m a little nervous right now. It’s a big step with the opening bid. It’s a big event and we’re expecting a big queue!

The new outlet has created 16 jobs and will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. It will be the second in Birmingham, joining Watford Road chip shop Sparkbrook. And the chain is growing rapidly with outlets across the country having sold “125 franchises in the past few months.”
