New poll finds Canadians yearn for overseas travel, with 87 percent saying travel is the source of some of their fondest memories

Global FinTech and Leader in International Money Transfers Wise Reveals Findings on Canadian Sentiment Around Travel During Pandemic

The results revealed that although the majority of Canadians who travel abroad (58%) remain wary of travel abroad due to the rise of the Delta COVID-19 variant, and fewer a quarter plan to travel abroad in the next six months, more than two-thirds (78%) say international travel is one of the things they look forward to the most as the pandemic wears on stabilizes.

The survey also found that Canadians are more reluctant to travel abroad than their neighbors to the south, with 42% of Americans planning trips abroad in the next six months, compared to just 24% of Canadians.

Top responses regarding what was most missed in international travel included discovering new sites (56%), experiencing new environments (53%), disconnecting and relaxing (53%) and learning to different cultures (52%).

While many Canadians cite major challenges such as hotel prices and inflated exchange rates as their main financial “problems” when traveling abroad, it is not surprising that about three-quarters of Canadians said they would find Wise’s services very useful on their next international trip.

Main findings of the survey:

  • 87 percent of Canadians agree that international travel has given them some of their most cherished memories

  • About four in five Canadians (78 percent) said as things get back to normal, international travel is one of the things they look forward to the most

  • More than half of Canadians – 55 percent – said they have a desire to travel abroad more than ever

  • Less than a quarter of Canadians – 24 percent – said they are currently planning an international trip in the next six months. Among those planning to travel during this period, men and young Canadians (18-34) were the most likely to plan international getaways at 28% and 32% respectively.

  • When asked what they missed most about international travel, seeing new sites, discovering new environments, disconnecting and relaxing, and learning about different cultures ranked in the top answers

  • 88% of Canadians said the pandemic has kept them from traveling abroad as much as they normally would

  • Canadians (77%) are more likely than Americans (68%) to say that border entry restrictions and quarantine rules have made them less interested in traveling abroad

  • 75 percent of Canadians said health and safety concerns amid the pandemic made them less interested in traveling abroad

Survey methodology
This survey was conducted between August 27-29, 2021 among a national sample of 500 international travelers in Canada. Interviews were conducted online and Morning Consult used robust sampling and weighting strategies guided by government statistics to ensure that our final data is nationally representative based on gender, age, age, household income, education level and region. The results of the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
