Nigeria take medal count to 8 at Birmingham 2022

Chioma Onyekwere won a gold medal for Nigeria in the women’s discus throw on Tuesday, throwing a season-high 61.70m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

It was the first time in Nigeria’s history that the country would medal in the women’s discus event at the Commonwealth Games.

Reigning African champion Onyekwere on Tuesday night at Birmingham’s Alexandra Stadium proved the bookmakers wrong; beating the fan favorite for the gold medal.

Her compatriot, Obiageri Ameachi, took the bronze after throwing 56.99m in the same event while Jade Lilly of England was second with her throw of 58.42m.

Ameachi is the current national champion.

This brings Nigeria’s medal tally at Birmingham 2022 to eight.

Athletics events at the Games continue on Wednesday. (NOPE)
