Not quite a Budapest hotel, this Airbnb offers rooms based on Wes Anderson movies

The exterior of the house looked quaint and intimate; once inside, however, a different story unfolded; cinematic worlds collided.

Each pastel-colored room at Airbnb Prince Edward County is themed after a film by Wes Anderson, the eccentric director whose works include Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tenenbaums, and span two decades. The house is located in Picton, a small town nestled in the heart of bucolic county, near Kingston, Ont.

Leah Gibson, a 24-year-old florist from Ottawa, visited “Mr. Anderson’s House” in mid-July for a night out with her boyfriend. She is a big fan of the director and wanted to check out the area, she said. This made Airbnb a hot ticket for her.

“We’re used to guerrilla camping, so I thought it would be nice to book something a little classier,” Gibson said. “It’s adorable. I really like Wes Anderson. It’s very suitable for young people who want to experience Prince Edward County.

Host Dayna Winter said she views the house as her creative outlet, an endeavor she has managed on her own. It opened the doors to Airbnb travelers last July.

“Everything is thrifty and homemade,” said Winter, who stays in Toronto when visitors arrive. “It’s an artistic project inspired by Anderson. He’s sort of my muse.

Within Winter is a bit of a regret, she said, given the intricate design feats that are integral to Anderson’s films.

“It’s a really, really difficult topic. Anderson has a great design mind and he obviously has a big team and a big budget to pull this off, so it was a bit of a challenge.

Guests the star spoke to had nothing but admiration for Winter’s work. Gibson said she marveled at Winter’s refined touches and how remarkably tidy the space was.

“Why stay at a regular Airbnb in town when you could pay the same price for a more personalized experience that pays a lot more attention to detail?” she wondered.

Visitors are not relegated to one room; the whole house is theirs.

The space is full of vintage trinkets and gadgets.

Leisse Wilcox, 36, spent a few nights at Airbnb in January to hide out and write articles for publications in Canada and the United States.

“I wanted a quiet space, not only to focus, but also to really feel the inspiration,” she said. “Going to a normal hotel wouldn’t have done the same. The space is incredibly inspired and creative.

Wilcox’s time there added to his lifelong crush on Anderson.

“Wes Anderson is just a great storyteller who taps into that unrequited child in all of us and honestly and openly embellishes it. The house is an interpretation of each of the films and it shows. In every room you can feel the scenario.
