Passengers slam ‘hell on earth’ at Manchester Airport with four hour wait for baggage

Passengers traveling from Manchester Airport this morning described their experience as ‘hell on earth’ after facing long queues and huge delays.

The city’s airport has been struggling for several weeks due to a staff shortage, leaving travelers frustrated and anxious, with some even missing their flights because of it. While Manchester Airport recently issued an update saying it was “on the road to recovery”, the situation at the airport does not appear to have improved.

Angry holidaymakers took to social media this morning to speak of ‘absolute and complete chaos’ with one person describing the situation as ‘hell on earth’, reports from the Manchester Evening News. Images show huge queues forming at security and check-in as well as long waits for luggage upon arrival.

Martin Daniels, who was at the airport at 4.40am this morning, said on Twitter that he didn’t think he would make his flight and Bryan Elwick shared video of a crowded check-in hall with lines of waiting “almost to the station”. The situation did not appear to improve over the next hour as Marion Wolstenholme said at 5:20 a.m. that the “chaos” continued.

She tweeted: “Chaos @manairport this morning. Almost 2 hour queue to file case and still no end in sight. Really really poor @easyJet. No organization, no communication. Queues upset , anxious and frustrated customers.” Meanwhile, Ozzy Hamid wrote: “Absolute carnage yet again at @manairport. Security queues and no staff to help, flight leaves in 40 mins.”

Sarah Thompson said she was stuck in the security queue for over 40 minutes at around 5.15am. She said: “Manchester Airport T2 security lanes are long. 40 minutes and It matters. Definitely need a 3 hour check-in at this time of day @manairport.”

At 6.15am, Mhari Oakes urged others to avoid the airport “like the plague”. She tweeted: “Hell on earth this morning @manairport – avoid it like the plague!!! Everyone misses flights despite arriving 3 hours before departure. Absolute chaos and complete. No staff registration.”

Kev Lowes said it was “the worst pre-flight experience” he’s ever had, after waiting in line for more than two hours. He said: “@manairport 2 hours to clear baggage drop and security at T2 (and only because we were ushered in as it was last call for a 0650 flight) Great staff.

“The organization is an absolute disaster and beyond a joke. Worst pre-flight experience I have ever had.”

A passenger said he waited four hours for his luggage to arrive at Manchester Airport

On arrivals, passengers encountered similar problems, with some waiting for hours for their luggage. Adam Thomas tweeted photos of passengers sitting on the ground as they waited this morning.

More than 8,000 people are believed to have applied for jobs at Manchester Airport in recent weeks and more than 1,000 new recruits have already been hired. Bosses said security wait times were improving and have fully reopened Terminal 3 to help cope with demand.

Last weekend, an airport spokesperson issued an apology to passengers. They said: “After two very damaging years, all of our operations are currently facing resource issues, including many third parties operating on our site, such as baggage handlers.

“We and our partners, including airlines and baggage handling agents, are actively recruiting for hundreds of positions and in the meantime we will continue to work together to ensure processes are running as efficiently as possible and to mitigate any issues. staff as much as possible.”

The airport and Swissport have been approached for comment.
