Pendle pub owner hit hard by pandemic to turn garage into holiday cottage

A pub owner whose income has been ‘severely affected’ by the pandemic has been allowed to convert a garage into a vacation rental.

Chris Joyce, who runs the George and Dragon in Barrowford, has submitted a planning request to transform an attached storage unit at the Grade II listed pub into a one bedroom cottage.

The vacation rental will also have a bathroom, living room and kitchen.

Documents submitted with the plans state: “The areas affected by the proposal are the attached garage storage area which is currently used to store various property of the owner.

“It is proposed to convert this rental into a short term vacation rental and will probably be marketed on the ‘Air BnB’ website.”

The George and Dragon, on Gisburn Road, is said to have been built in the early 19th century.

A heritage statement submitted with the plans revealed that “the proposals are not expected to have a negative effect on the surrounding area and will allow better use of the space and give an additional source of income to a public house. which has been severely affected by the current pandemic. “

In granting permission, the Pendle Borough Council acknowledged that there could be “concerns about the potential noise of the pub with live musical events which might disturb those staying in the accommodation”, but as the apartment would be used as temporary accommodation, there would be no objection. .

Both the council’s conservation officer and the Georgian Society said uPVC would not be appropriate for a listed property and as a result, Mr. Joyce has removed this material.

There are currently only four airbnb vacation rentals in Barrowford, which sits at the confluence of two rivers; Pendle Water and Colne Water.

The upscale village is full of pretty 17th and 18th century farms and weavers’ cottages.
