Post-pandemic, Airbnb is also giving rural Florida counties a boost

People don’t just stay Airbnb in or near Miami hotspots disney world.

The company said Thursday that an increasing number of people are choosing to visit rural parts of the state. Airbnb hosts in some of Florida’s less populated areas earned more than $100 million in 2021, according to the company.

Rural stays are another way tourism and travel have been altered by the pandemic, according to Airbnb.

Airbnb released data showing that hosts in some counties earned several thousand dollars on the booking platform last year, while for others tourism was a big enough force to generate millions.

For example, Franklin County Hosts won $5 million for offering accommodations in the county along the Gulf of Mexico with fewer than 15,000 residents.

In Monroe County, where the county seat is Key West — where so many people visit but only about 75,000 people are residents — Airbnb hosts earned $92 million last year.

Hosts from Bradford County, located between Gainesville and Jacksonville with a population of less than 30,000, won $150,000.

And hosts in Hardee County, which has fewer than 30,000 people in the central part of the state, have earmarked $30,000 in revenue for Airbnb stays.

Some of these places were previously under the radar when it came to travel. Since the start of the pandemic, 26 cities and towns in Florida have received their first-ever Airbnb guest, the company said.

It’s a worldwide phenomenon, according to the roommate company.

“The best illustration of how travel has transformed during the pandemic can be found in the thousands of cities around the world that have welcomed their first Airbnb guests,” the company said in a press release. “As of March 2020, more than 8,100 cities and towns worldwide have received their first-ever Airbnb reservations – including more than 1,300 in the United States and Airbnb guests have already booked stays in more than 72,000 cities and towns. this summer.”
