PV Sindhu wins gold in Birmingham
India’s commuter ace PV Sindhu won the women’s singles badminton gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham on Monday August 8.
Sindhu beat Canadian Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 in the final.
India, world number seven, dominated their 13th-ranked opponent in front of a large crowd in the NEC arena.
The 30-year-old was expected to produce something special for her first victory over Sindhu in eight years, but the Indian didn’t give her a window.
Sindhu was clinical in his short game and jumped at any attacking opportunity.

Michelle had beaten the 2019 world champion at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
In the first game, Michelle was trying to get points by playing close to the net while Sindhu was the most offensive. A smash on the left from Li made it 7-5 before the Canadian came with a drop shot on the right from Sindhu to make it 7-6.
Sindhu took three straight points after the break to extend their lead to 14-8. Michelle then scored a regulation forehand drop, leaving her smiling in frustration. Michelle had back-to-back game winners for 14-17, but Sindhu won the opener with a shot to the body of the Canadian.
The Hyderabadi took a 4-2 lead in the second with a brilliant body recovery and sailed 11-6 in the interval. The crowd felt a comeback from Michelle who took the game’s longest rally with a forehand winner. Sindhu, however, closed the door to him and achieved a great victory with a crosscourt winner.
“I was waiting for this gold medal for a long time and finally I got it. I’m super happy. Thanks to the crowd, they got me the win today,” Sindhu said after the final.
