Quad Cities expected snow totals drop to a trace at 3″
Another winter storm is approaching the Quad Cities area. As the storm gets closer, snowfall forecasts become clearer, as does the storm’s path. Officials originally predicted the Quad Cities could see up to 6 inches of snow, but that snowfall forecast has changed for the better. Officials now believe we’ll see a 3-inch snow trail in the Quad Cities subway.
the Quad Cities National Weather Service (NWS) has changed its snowfall forecast for the impending winter storm which will arrive late Tuesday evening and last through Thursday.
Instead of the predicted 1 to 6 inches of snowfall, NWS officials now say we could see a trace of 3 inches of snow between tonight and Thursday. Although the forecast for total snowfall has dropped, the winter storm is expected to impact travel during the Wednesday morning commute and throughout Wednesday.
NWS officials say that this long duration snowfall event will still bring a very steep gradient of snow accumulation to the region. The largest impacts and higher snowfall totals will be south and east of the Quad Cities region and will have a sharp cut off.
This sharp cutoff means there will be little to no snowfall on the north side of the system through southeastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois.
Officials say the snow will end from west to east early Thursday. Strong winds will continue all day Thursday causing blowing and drifting.
Winter Weather Advisories and Winter storm warnings were broadcast in the southern and southeastern parts of the listening area.
Originally, on Monday, officials from the Quad Cities National Weather Service released their first snowfall forecast for how much snow we could get Tuesday night through Thursday.
The long-duration snowfall event is still expected to begin Tuesday evening and last through Thursday.
NWS officials say the main impacts are associated with total snowfall, not snowfall rates.
