A rare 19th century style house has come on the market in Wexford for €70,000 and is one of 3,000 of its kind remaining in Ireland.

The one-bedroom thatched roof house is only 56 sqm. and was built in 1940.

It has endless potential which can be seen with a similar property next door which has been completely renovated.

In the 19th century, most Irish families once slept under thatched roofs, but these became rare when the government introduced grants that encouraged homeowners to replace thatch with more easily maintained slates or tiles.

Consequently, thatched cottages soon became associated with housing for the poor and were left abandoned by many previous owners.

According to the popular Instagram account, @CheapIrishHomes, “there are only around 3,000 thatched roof buildings left in Ireland, and a few dozen thatch left in the industry to maintain them.”

There has been a growing interest in restoring these types of houses and so the Irish government has provided grants to renovate these properties.

It would cost around £25,000 to re-thatch a chalet of this size, depending on the type of thatch used – and it can last around 20 years.
