The ACC also ran the second consecutive Birmingham Bowl foe
Auburn football is one-third of the way to bowling eligibility, having picked up two wins in their opening week matchups against Mercer and San Jose State. Neither were pretty for the Tigers spread bettors, and no one should come out of the SJSU game feeling like this team is ready to go into Sanford or Bryant-Denny ready to do. jump the doors of the Dawgs or the northern team.
Still, if anything, AU’s opponents don’t exactly look like world beaters themselves. While Mizzou played the part against LA Tech and LSU certainly did the same against Southern, Jordan-Hare Stadium looks likely to overwhelm one, if not both, of these disappointing offenses over the next few weeks. Western Kentucky probably isn’t ready to rock the boat against a Power Five team like they would have if Bailey Zappe was still under center and Texas A&M was just gunned down by App State at home.
That’s not even to get into the odds of walking into stadiums at either school in Mississippi and doing what Auburn football tends to do against teams in that state — the Cowbell Bulldogs fans, we know how things went last November, but the Tigers are 4-2 in the last six. Arkansas looks like a world champion, but you can throw them in that boat too. Oh, and don’t overlook the orange-out this Saturday.
That said, a bowl appearance is far from impossible for Auburn, although a New Year’s Six bowl isn’t very likely. College Football News released their bowl game predictions, and Virginia Tech, also run by the ACC, was named UA’s opponent for the Tigers’ second consecutive Birmingham Bowl.
Virginia Tech was where Cam Newton nearly went before he became an Auburn football legend
One of the craziest stories to come out of Cam Newton’s evolution into a fashion mogul from the ‘Scam Newton’ days of his legendary Auburn football run was that ‘Superman’ had almost chose Virginia Tech for some weird reason…
Newton detailed how the Hokies’ brown and orange combination almost kept him away from the Plains:
“I considered a school just because of the uniform – Virginia Tech…this brown orange collaboration.”
VT wasn’t equally raced in 2010 and had double-digit win totals from 2004 to 2011. It’s possible he could have won it all for Frank Beamer, but his caption just means more *wink*l ‘having done for Auburn.
