Bruern’s award-winning self-catering accommodation is a collection of classic country house-style cottages that have amazed visitors to the Cotswolds for almost 30 years. The beautiful conversion of 12 buildings began in 1992 and the estate owned by Judy Astor has become something of an oasis in a country oasis. Offering comfort, peace and quiet, and a home away from home (if your home has ever appeared on the front of a box of chocolate, that is), it’s no wonder the guests can’t get enough of the place.

For GQ, we stayed at Goodwood Cottage and if it weren’t for politeness (and, more importantly, the fact that the local game wardens carry guns) we might have claimed the rights of the squatters. From the master bedroom, with a four-poster king-size bed, to the huge living room with sofas that make you dumbfounded, every space in the house will make you smile. They will also leave you a wonderful welcome basket so that you don’t have to venture out for breakfast on the first morning.

However, if you can get away from the chalet there is also a games room, swimming pool and lovely communal gardens to explore. Plus, Bruern can even accommodate your furry friend, just to complete the picture perfect. The only thing they can’t do is ease the overwhelming sense of disappointment when it’s time to go.
