The pretty village of Castleton is pure Christmas card material – stone houses overlooking trickling streams backed by steep hills, with white roads winding through the surrounding valleys. On summer weekends, it’s a honeypot for local walkers; in winter, cozy pubs wedged between leaning rows of farm shops and tearooms are more of a calling card than hiking trails. Host Marianne charms traditionalists in her 200-year-old cottage – with its flagstone floor, cantou fireplace and stacks of board games for snowy evenings – and leaves a platter of wine, artisan pork pies and shortbread for your arrival. The kitchen is more than big enough to cook up a nice Christmas lunch, followed by a stroll to The George or Ye Olde Nags Head for a locally brewed pint.
