THE OUTNET Style Director Sinead Cutts shares her Milan travel guide

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m a local or even an “insider” when it comes to Milan. However, it is one of my favorite cities, especially for a quick getaway. Whether you’re visiting our offices or heading there with friends for the weekend, it’s the perfect destination that’s always brimming with energy. Irresistible Italian glamour, incredible architecture and not to mention gastronomic delights – this is one of my favorite places in the world.

STAY…

For a central location, perfect for a short business trip, I head to the Vik Gallery in the heart of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This super stylish designer hotel is truly a must stay. Each room has a striking and unique design – think palatial furnishings, mosaics and art from past and present, not to mention a short walk from that magnificent ‘wedding cake’ of a church – the Duomo. Make sure you get a room with a view of the Galleria.

A little further from the tourist center (which can also be pleasant) and closer to the trendy design district of Brera, Hotel VIU. Worth a visit just for the rooftop pool, love the lively cocktail bar and the 360 degree view of Milan!

DO…

For beautifully crafted art and unique gifts, 10 CORSO COMO is an absolute must.

And another wonderful shop to visit with the most current and curated selection of top designers are Antonia.

See contemporary art on a monumental scale, visit Pirelli Hangar Bicocca. Free to visit, the permanent exhibition of Anselm Kiefer is immense.

The Isola region and the vertical forest, ‘Bosco Verticale’ is another must-have. An exceptional piece of architecture, incorporating a modern green space covering the exterior of the residential towers. Each season brings a new palette and dimension to construction.

Also worth a visit is the Brera Design District. You can browse luxury antique and designer boutiques, as well as a host of galleries, before stopping for a coffee at the elegant Cafe Fernanda between exposures.

No trip to Milan would be complete without a visit to La Scala Theater for that truly authentic opera experience. Like the city itself, it is truly unforgettable.

TO EAT…

There are so many amazing options when it comes to dining in Milan! Start the day with breakfast at Bar Luce in Fondazione Prada. Designed by Wes Anderson, it feels like you’ve stepped into one of his movies, the cafe brings 1950s/60s Italy to life; Formica furniture and candy pastel shades, old-fashioned candy jars and delicious coffee – of course!

For lunch, try Bacaro Montenapoleone. The most intimate of the courtyard restaurants – it’s a hidden gem with its homemade pasta and cloud-shaped tiramisu – perfecto!

Need a little sweetness in the afternoon (even after that tiramisu!)? Stop at Pasticceria Marchesi 1824, in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Super chic and perfect pastries and cakes that are (almost) too good to eat!

I really like the Navigli district. It has a historic ‘old town’ feel, but it’s still crowded and lively on summer evenings. The perfect place for a pre-dinner “happy hour” is one of its hidden restaurants tucked away in the side streets. It’s a great place to watch the world go by after a busy day of sightseeing!

Bang in the heart of the city is Risoelatte with its unique 60s style interior and menu. Nostalgic, simple, homemade dishes – it takes me right back to my Swiss grandmother’s cooking!

TAKE…

Don’t forget how sweltering Milan/Italy can get in the summer months. Be sure to pack flowing fabrics: palazzo pants and a white tank top or tailored dress shorts are perfect.

I will wear my organic cotton poplin dress by Iris & Ink with minimalist black sandals and very large Prada sunglasses (of course)!
