NEW YORK, June 29 — Airbnb has made its pandemic-era party ban permanent at rental properties around the world through its app, saying Tuesday the rules have been effective against problematic events.
The rental platform has gradually tightened its party policies after high-profile complaints and issues, including a 2019 shooting that left five people dead in California.
Airbnb has temporarily banned events in 2020 as a measure against the spread of Covid, but it has proven effective against large or disruptive gatherings as well.
“Over time, the party ban has become much more than a public health measure. It turned into a fundamental community policy,” the company said.
In the past, landlords had the option to use their best judgment on whether or not to allow parties, but the rules have been tightened to ban “party houses” as well as large events advertised on social media.
After the pandemic hit, causing many nightlife venues to close, people sometimes turned to hosting events at venues rented through Airbnb, which in turn became a problem.
But Airbnb has argued that the stricter rules have been effective in reducing the rate of noise complaints it has received.
Under the new policy, Airbnb will also lift its 16-person cap on rental properties, a rule enacted against Covid but which will now take into account that some larger or outdoor sites are suitable for larger groups.
The company said people who violate the rules face consequences ranging from account suspension to complete removal from the platform, adding that in 2021, more than 6,600 guests were suspended due to ban on the party. —AFP
