Top Categories for 2022

In 2022, travelers found themselves sitting by the swimming pool or catch some rays on a sandy beach beach. These two elements related to water Categories came out on top, with Tropical, seafront, surf spot and lake houses also make appearances.

Based on bookings from May 11 through September 30, these were the top travel categories in 2022 for US customers2:

And just in time for the holidays, the Airbnb 2022 Winter releaseintroduced six new categories this month, which are sure to join the ranks of the most popular:

  • New – Homes added to Airbnb in the last 10 weeks.
  • The roof of the world – Homes about 10,000 feet above sea level, often with stunning views.
  • Tendency – Top rated homes that received more ad views compared to the previous week.
  • Adapted – Houses adapted for wheelchair access, with verified step-free access routes in the house, bedroom and bathroom.
  • To play – Homes with basketball courts, game rooms, miniature golf, water slides and more.
  • Hanok – Traditional Korean houses built with natural materials.

The return of international travel

In 2022, we continued to see changes in the way people live, work, and travel on Airbnb. It is clear that the new flexibility offered by remote and hybrid working has led to a revolution in the way we travel, especially when it comes to international destinations.

The reopening of the world’s largest inbound travel market has also unlocked pent-up demand from international travelers eager to reconnect with loved ones or re-visit their favorite destinations in the United States.

Between November 8, 2021 and September 30, 2022, stays of 28 nights or more were the fastest growing trip duration among foreign travelers to the United States3. Additionally, more than 30% of international travelers to the United States last year were between the ages of 30 and 40. In the year since the US borders reopened to international travelers, Airbnb hosts in more than 7,500 different destinations in the US have hosted international guests4.

As cross-border travel has returned to the United States over the past year, most international guests have come from the following five cities5:

  • London, United Kingdom
  • Toronto, Canada
  • Paris, France
  • Seoul, South Korea
  • Mexico City, Mexico

Besides the United States, travelers crossed seas and continents to visit other foreign destinations, including destinations ranging from Asia to Australia and from Europe to South America.

For the upcoming holiday season, travelers continue to escape the cold to warmer destinations, still favoring the pool, beach and tropical destinations. In the United States, the main categories for recording dates between November 23 and December 31 are as followsseven:
