This couple won $ 21,000 in one year with their little Airbnb house
If you’ve always wanted to experience the cottage life, there’s no better place to look than Airbnb. The platform offers many real mini-house experiences across the country. In fact, a particular rental located just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada has become a big hit among clients, as well as a lucrative business venture for its hosts. Initiated recently featured Jilan Wise’s story of how she turned her old cottage into a bustling Airbnb. Enter the blue Baloo!
This 140-square-foot, two-story cottage features two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living area. It currently has a 4.88 out of 5 star rating on the platform along with over 100 customer reviews praising the minimalist pad as well as the Super Host Jilan.
Jilan’s husband Josh, who has a master’s degree in architecture, built the whole house himself. All in all, it cost the couple $ 19,000 to bring this tiny home to life – which they successfully paid for in their first year since moving in. They lived happily inside the Blue Baloo with their two children and their dogs for two years.
However, when zoning laws prohibited them from continuing to live there full time, they had to change gears and move to a larger house, one with a large backyard where they could park their small house. Just because they couldn’t live in their tiny house full time, that didn’t mean other people couldn’t live out their labor of love.
In February 2019, they put the house up for sale on Airbnb. They spent $ 1,000 to prepare the house for the guests – which they collected in their first month. They also achieve Super Host status within their first 30 days.
“We booked so quickly, and I think it’s because we’re in such a niche that we don’t have anything like it around us,” Jilan told the store. “People said, ‘I’m going to Vegas and I want to have this really different experience.'”
She attributed part of the rental’s success to its price. Instead of estimating the rates themselves, Jilan and her husband let the Airbnb algorithm adjust the price for them, which typically puts it at a price of between $ 95 and $ 125 per night. They also did not impose a minimum length of stay.
Within a year of listing the house on Airbnb, the Wise family had earned over $ 21,000 hosting guests in their old home. Since it was not their main source of income, “it was just extra money to play.”
After their first year in business, they spent $ 2,000 to have the house thoroughly cleaned by a professional after guest damage started to accumulate (think: spilled Slurpee that had seeped through across the floor). The couple also had to completely renovate the bathroom after a guest broke the pipes and flooded the area, costing an additional $ 1,500.
“We had a few doozies, and it was a great learning experience, but we also had a ton of really great people who stayed with us. It’s sure bittersweet,” Jilan said. .
In March, she removed the Blue Baloo from the platform due to COVID-19 precautions, but plans to reopen it when the time comes. Currently, the page seems active – but does not allow any guest before March 2021.
“We wanted as many people as possible in this little house because it is an introduction to this way of life which we believe is the future of housing,” she added. “It was totally worth it. The people we met were amazing.”
