Varsho brace scores 3 in 10th in Dbacks 7-6 win over Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) — With the game tied at 4 going into the top of the 10th inning, Cubs’ Rowan Wick flicked a few fastballs past Arizona’s Daulton Varsho before Varsho settled into high batting pressure.

“All I thought was, ‘I can’t get beat no more,'” Varsho said.

He did not do it.

Varsho hit a two-out, three-RBI brace against Wick (1-1), then scored on Andrelton Simmons’ pitching error to lift the Diamondbacks to a 7-6 win over Chicago.

“I just knew I had an opportunity (on throwing) to get into third place and still give us a chance to score another run there,” Varsho said. “When he went through (Yan Gomes) and hit the brick (behind home plate), I was like I was going to keep going. It’s kind of pinball over there with all the bricks.

Varsho couldn’t remember the last time he went all the way back without kicking a ball out of the park.

“Maybe since little league, but it’s been a long time,” said Varsho, who was 3 of 5 with three RBIs and is second on the Diamondbacks with eight doubles this season.

Arizona got just one hit against Cubs starter Justin Steele but came alive against the Chicago bullpen, going an eighth inning three-run extra after falling 4- 0.

“Our guys haven’t stopped,” Diamondbacks manager Terry Lovullo said. “They had every right to. They’re a team with a good heartbeat. I’ve talked about it all this road trip, it’s a common denominator for us.

Arizona has won three straight after ending a six-game losing streak in Game 1 of the series on Thursday.
