Warsaw graduate Andrew Mevis targets NFL as one of nation’s top kickers

AMES, Iowa (WANE) – Can he kick? Andrew Mevis can.

The Warsaw graduate enters April as one of the top kicking prospects in this year’s NFL Draft class. Mevis spent his first four years and three seasons at Fordham before transferring to Iowa State. In his only season with the Cyclones, Mevis scored 20 of 23 goals, including one 54 yards long.

Mevis earned several accolades after last season at Iowa State. He was named a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the top kicker in college football. The kicker was also invited to this year’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.

With his Pro Day already behind him, Mevis is spending the rest of April training at Ames, preparing for the possibility of kicking into the NFL. Although his main focus is on field placement and place kicks, Mevis has also proven he can kick in no time. He believes flexibility only adds to his project profile.

“Having the ability to throw in and take over if needed in an emergency is extremely important, and I have the ability to do that.”

Kickers rarely hear their name called in the NFL Draft, but it’s not uncommon. Evan McPherson was the only kicker selected in last year’s draft after the Bengals took him out in the fifth round. A total of 11 kickers have been drafted since 2017. Of those 11 recruits, seven were active at the end of the 2021 season.

Mevis understands that the chances of being drafted are low. All he needs is a chance.

“It’s the moment I’m looking towards – it’s that moment of opportunity – because then I can show what I can do and prove to them that I belong.” Mevis said.

The NFL Draft will take place April 28-30.
