Dubai: The electric car revolution isn’t just hitting Dubai‘s roads, it’s soaring.

You read that right, and for confirmation, head to the booth of cybertechnology company Acronis at Gitex Global 2021, where you will meet the “Airspeeder”. Billed as the world’s first electric flying racing car, the Airspeeder prototype makes its debut for the first time in the United Arab Emirates.

It joins a growing list of “electric vertical take-off and landing” (or eVTOL) flight concepts that expect to take off soon enough.

“Our Speeders will fly in bursts of 20 minutes with quick pit stops, [and] adding an important and compelling strategic layer to the racing action, ”said Jack Withinshaw, Airspeeder’s Commercial Director.

In the same spirit as the Formula 1 races.

The Airspeeders are from the manufacturer Alauda, and the intention is to make them “run” only in the air. “Our Speeders operate exclusively in the air with rapid acceleration capability,” Withinshaw said. “Indeed, they have a thrust-to-weight ratio similar to that of an F-16 jet and go from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 2.5 seconds.”

Will it fly – commercially?

Withinshaw doesn’t seem to doubt the commercial possibilities, when the Airspeeder makes this transition from a cool prototype to a hot set of flying wheels. “Elite” pilots from aviation, motorsport – and “even electronic sports” – will pilot these machines through electrically governed courses “above some of the most visually striking places in the world”.

“The eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) industry is expected to represent $ 1.5 trillion by 2040,” the official added. “As a revolution in mobility, electric flying cars have the potential to completely transform the way we travel in urban settings.

“Indeed, they are already finding powerful business applications in logistics and even remote medical supplies. What Aisrpseeder does by racing is providing a space and a place for the industry to rapidly develop the security technologies, the digital ecosystem and the performance and dynamics innovations that will accelerate the arrival of these key innovations.

“Our cyber protection partner, Acronis, and its cyberfit delivery partner, Teknov8, secure valuable data that informs key engineering and racing strategy decisions. This is a vital innovation on the road to commercialization of this industry.

Why have the Airspeeder racing?

For the manufacturer, being in the race is what catches the eye – and speeds up progress on the development side.

“Quite simply, running has always been a force for accelerating progress on the cusp of any mobility revolution,” said Jack Withinshaw. “You have to look at the technological and safety features that have filtered from F1 to the use of mainstream road cars to see the advancements in sports competition.

“We are creating motorsport designed entirely for the demands of the 21st century. Airspeeder races will have minimal impact as we are powered by clean air technology and do not need the heavy infrastructure of more traditional motorsport. This will drive change and excite a whole new generation native to eSports and with enormous sensitivity to the global demand to consume less. ”
