‘We need blood’ – Red Cross calls for donors in South Jersey
The cry for help came this week from the Red Cross people in South Jersey. Blood supplies are dangerously low and the Red Cross has scheduled a blood drive for Friday July 23 in Egg Harbor Township and hardly anyone has signed up to donate blood yet.
The last time the American Red Cross contacted us was about a year ago, at the height of the pandemic, when blood donation slowed due to fear and uncertainty about donation. of blood during Covid-19.
A year later, the Red Cross says an increase in the number of cases of trauma, organ transplants and elective surgeries requiring blood products has depleted the country’s blood supply.
The blood supply in the United States has fallen to the “red” level, which means most blood bank stocks nationwide have less than a day’s supply. Donations are urgent.
The need for type O blood is particularly acute, with less than half a day’s supply of type O blood available. Type O is the most requested blood group by hospitals and the most transfused blood group.
Type O negative is the universal blood group and what emergency room staff look for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.
Okay, you get it. The Red Cross needs your help to donate blood, especially if you are type O.
The Red Cross blood drive will take place on Friday, July 23 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Trinity Justice Lodge # 79, 563 Zion Road, Egg Harbor Township. Register to donate blood here
