We scoured Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Lidl supermarkets to see how much a jar of Lurpak costs

Lurpak butter prices have reached exorbitant figures amid a cost of living crisis.

Many Britons are facing huge hits to their purse strings as fuel prices, energy bills and food rise. Saving on everyday items is now essential, but the staggering prices of certain items like a tub of margarine have grabbed the headlines.

Buyers have expressed outrage at the exorbitant prices of Lurpak in their local supermarkets. A jar of 1 kg of one of the nation’s favorites was £9.35 in Iceland, while a 750g jar would set you back £7.25 at Sainsbury’s.

Lurpak’s outrageously high prices have since become a target for thieves. Reports point to an increase in shoplifting as soaring food prices have turned many supermarket staples into high-value products. This has given rise to at least one Asda store adding security labels to packs of 750g jars which were on sale for £6.

Security tags are typically used on more expensive items such as razor blades, alcohol, DVDs, and electrical appliances. The average 500g price of Lurpak is up 33% from June last year, according to data analyst Trolley.co.uk.

We went to five major supermarkets that carried the Lurpak brand to see if the prices were really as high as the reports indicated.
