Weymouth scores a touch of class with Keelan O’Connell

TERRAS have signed former Bournemouth youngster Keelan O’Connell from National League Torquay United.

O’Connell made 28 league appearances in his one and only season with the Gulls, joining Gary Johnson’s fifth-tier side following his release from Cherries last summer.

Able to play on both flanks, former O’Connell manager Johnson confirmed the 22-year-old’s decision to leave Plainmoor was a mutual one, in view of more playing time for O’Connell.

By giving up a division, O’Connell also returned to Dorset, closer to his family.

Speaking to the Torquay website, Johnson shared: “Keelan O’Connell has agreed to join Weymouth on a permanent contract.

“We appreciate his time here at Torquay, but Keelan and I have agreed that he needs to play regularly every week to develop his game.

Weymouth boss David Oldfield was enthusiastic about his latest signing, telling Weymouth’s website: “We are looking to rebuild the squad with good players and good people.

“We think we’ve managed to do that with Keelan.

“He’s another player full of potential and ability who has the opportunity to contribute to our goals by having a hard-working, hungry squad.

“We know the level we need to reach this season and Keelan will prove to be an important factor in the progress of our club.

“We very much look forward to working with him.”
