What can travelers expect from Airbnb Play?

People stay with Airbnbs (or any form of accommodation, really) for countless reasons, and a solo traveler may not be looking for the same things as a mass-traveling family. This is one of the reasons why the company has started grouping different residences into certain categories. Among them is “Play” – that Airbnb describe as “[h]omes with basketball courts, game rooms, miniature golf, water slides and more.”

What does this mean in practice? In a new article for Matador NetworkHannah D. Cooper has researched the range of spaces available to book in this new category to give potential travelers a better idea of what to expect.

A big takeaway is that the new category still contains a wide range of spaces, both in terms of what they have to offer, how many people the space can accommodate, and cost. A cabin in the British town of Plymouth will cost travelers $130 a night, while a chalet in Meribel in the French Alps is slightly more expensive – $3,962 per night for up to 16 people.

Some of the price contrasts can be attributed to the capacity of the spaces, which also makes sense. Staying in a house that can comfortably accommodate more than a dozen people will inevitably cost more than a house designed for a couple or a small family.

The article also singles out some Airbnbs in prime locations, whether it’s the aforementioned Alps or a 16-person destination in the Dominican Republic. There are countless ways to travel; this new system gives pride of place to large spaces.
