Craigh na Dun
Kinloch Rannoch
Claire becomes a time traveler when she crosses the mythical Craigh na Dun. While the standing stone rock formations aren’t real (they’re made of polystyrene), Kinloch Rannoch’s stunning natural beauty is genuine.
Executive producer Maril Davis is in love with Kinloch Rannoch. Of course, this is where the magic of the show begins, which would automatically make it sentimental. But she told Travel + Leisure that it “lives up to the ‘four seasons in one day’ phenomenon that is common in Scotland. During filming for season 2, we experienced brilliant blue skies, from the snow, rain and high winds, all in the space of an hour!
So, if you plan to visit this place, be sure to pack your rain gear and dress in layers. Where is Foreign filmed? Not in a mild and predictable climate.
Versailles
Drummond Castle Gardens
How could a film crew reproduce the sumptuous gardens of Versailles? Using Drummond Castle Gardens, of course.
Unfortunately, you cannot enter the castle, as Drummond Castle itself is not available for public viewing. However, you can visit the beautiful gardens outside.
Inverness
Falklands
Instead of filming in Inverness, the cast and crew filmed in the village of Falkland. It is located just an hour north of Edinburgh.
Visiting Falkland gives you the opportunity to experience history for yourself. And you can even stay in the guesthouse used in the show! In real life, it’s called the Covenanter Hotel. When you stay there, you can look out the window onto the very fountain where we first see Jamie’s ghost.
Wilmington, North Carolina
Wardpark Studios, Scotland
While the Blue Ridge Mountains were the work of green screen magic, the set designers actually brought colonial North Carolina to life. With filming taking place in Scotland, it is easier for the team to replicate the settlements at Wardpark Studios.
However, it was not without its fair share of challenges. Steele, one of the set designers, explained, “For the past few years we’ve been working exclusively with stone sets, but in colonial America, it’s all clinched.”
Castle Leoch
Doune Castle
Where is Foreign filmed? Apparently in a popular and historic filming location.
If you are a fan of Foreign, game of thrones, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Doune Castle has to be on your must-travel list. 53km northeast of Glasgow is this magnificent 14th century castle. Used as Winterfell in the game of thrones pilot, this actual castle represented the home of Colum MacKenzie and the clan in Foreign.
Fort William
castle of darkness
Blackness Castle is sometimes called “the ship that never sailed”. If you look at the castle from the outside at a right angle, it looks like a big ship. In Foreign, it’s Black Jack Randall’s Fort William. In Season 1, Jamie receives a flogging here.
Residence of the Duke of Sandringham
Hopetoun Domain
Do you remember the elegant bedrooms in the Duke of Sandringham’s house? This breathtaking red room is actually the red living room of the Hopetoun house. Additionally, this setting also served an ending in season 2. The exterior was used as a Parisian street in the second season.
Mohawk Village
Faskally Forest, Scotland
Foreign the crew painstakingly recreated the look of a Native American village in Scotland’s Faskally Forest. The location is just south of the Cairngorms National Park. It is also half an hour from Craigh Na Dun’s Kinloch Rannoch filming location. To fill out the fictional village, the casting team flew 100 First Nations actors to the site in Scotland from Canada.
Malcolm’s Printing House
Bakehouse Close, Scotland
Executive producer Maril Davis admits this location is one of her favorites from the entire series. She said: “It’s rare to find an area that we can film on that is actually on the show…It’s always exciting to be able to film on the Royal Mile.” The filming location of Bakehouse Close serves as the exterior of the print shop.
The secondary location is a sound stage in Glasgow for the interior of the store. This set actually has 2 working printing presses to sell authenticity.
fraser ridge
Row Hill
Where are the Fraser’s Ridge scenes filmed? Whereas the cast and crew have done their best to keep this location under lock and key, we know the infamous Ridge resides on an undisclosed private estate on Scottish soil. It is believed to be near Doune in a wooded area known as the Hill of Row.
Where is Outlander filmed?
The set is not just an outer shell. While most interior filming takes place on a soundstage, the designers also carefully crafted an interior set. It is only used for filming inside and outside windows. But they wanted to have that option when filming.
Designer Steele explained: “We wanted everything to be as rich as possible, so we hand stained all the wood with waxes, added two chimneys and added shine to the paint, so it was also luxurious than other Outlander sets. I looked at the one-room cabin and thought, “I could live like this.”
Although we still don’t know “where is Foreign filmed? when it comes to Fraser’s Ridge, there’s a lot of Claire and Jamie Foreign spots to explore. And who knows? Maybe one day the private owners open an Airbnb. So one day you might be able to live in Diana Gabaldon’s masterpiece for real.
