Why was a gallery in Prague transformed into an apartment for exhibiting social experiences?

Czech Republic: Prague Galerie NoD opened a unique exhibition apartment and social experience this week, which will be available to the public for rent on Airbnb.

On Tuesday, March 5, the art gallery was transformed into a fully operational private apartment furnished by the artist collective RAFANI, and it will be available for rent to locals or visitors to Prague, through the rental platform.

The project is a way to bring the current public debate around the impact of short-term rentals on the character of urban residential neighborhoods and the availability of affordable housing in the foreground.

Artistic director and curator of the NoD Gallery, Pavel Kubesa, said: “This is probably (one of) the very first projects that, for a limited period, will convert a traditional white cube gallery space into a full-fledged apartment that can be rented on an online platform. .”

Although the public cannot enter the apartment, there will be a video art installation next to its entrance, shot inside the apartment, which highlights the aesthetics of the exhibition.

Those who rent the apartment will also receive an unorthodox guide to Prague.

Meanwhile, the exhibition incorporates a platform for a discussion centered on the global potential, social consequences and limits of the sharing economy.

The apartment has a separate bedroom and a fully furnished dining room that can accommodate four people. A toilet, a bathroom and a kitchenette are accessible from the common area.

The Czech artistic group Rafani, founded in 2000, is at the origin of this social experiment and has long been interested in the art of public space. It also explores the structural concept of exhibitions, as well as the metaphorical possibilities of art as a tool to animate important public discussions.

Kubesa said, “As an exhibition institution, we strive to create an intellectual environment and a basis for social criticism and dialogue. We are impatiently awaiting the response it will generate with the general public and the tenants of the apartment, but also with from Airbnb Czech Republic.”

The exchange platform offers a debate on the issues of the sharing economy, namely “platform capitalism” and the gentrification of urban areas.

Personalities including artists and representatives from the fields of economy, architecture and urban planning, local authorities and web mediation platforms, will take part in the discussion.

The apartment can be rented through the Airbnb site for up to two nights here.

The exhibition runs until April 10. For more information, visit the website here.
