You can stay in a Cuban-themed grand classic with its own rum bar in the heart of Castlefield

The rules for overseas travel are constantly changing – one minute we’ve got the green light, the next hordes of people are frantically scrambling for a flight home before the quarantine rules are introduced.

With so much confusion and upheaval, many of us have decided not to travel abroad and instead are on vacation a little closer to home.

We have North Wales, the Lake District and the Peak District within hours of our home here in Manchester.

But for those who prefer not to venture too far, there are exciting – and floating – accommodation options even closer to home.

A quick search on Airbnb and we found four houseboat stays in and around Manchester, and some are even available in August.

15-04 downtown boutique

The living space of the boat with boutique-style decor

Located in the heart of Castlefield and a short walk from Deansgate is this great classic.

With an original interior and a nice little outdoor seating area, it seems like the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

And the best part is definitely the Honesty Bar – it has wine, beer, spirits, games, and even fancy dress. The owners have thought of everything.

And it is pet friendly so your furry friends can enjoy a little stay too.

It costs £ 91 per night although there isn’t much availability until October.

Cuban-inspired 15-04

Another boat also with the same host as the last one is this Cuban-inspired floating retreat. The owners have obviously applied their boutique taste to the decor of this boat as well.

And like the last one, this one also has an honesty bar. But in keeping with its Havana style, it’s all about rum, although it also includes wine and beer.

This boat has a double bed and a single sleeper car, and has a lovely outside deck to sit in and watch the world go by.

It costs £ 91 per night with availability in August.

The MCR Hive

Another boat located in the heart of Castlefield is The Beehive, and with a number of bars and restaurants nearby, you’re not far from the action when you’d rather venture out onto dry land.

Sleeping up to four people, this great classic has even managed to fit into a king size bed so you can enjoy the comforts of home while you are away.

Prices vary from £ 129 per night with some availability in August.

Hazel is a classic in Ashton-under-Lyne
Hazel is a boat in Ashton-under-Lyne

Located in the Portland Basin in Ashton-under-Lyne, Hazel is over 100 years old. The great classic ‘wooden head’ Runcorn was built in 1913 to carry salt and later coal, but has now been restored as a place to stay for vacationers.

The area has a lot to offer guests, with canal and river fishing, and many local pubs and restaurants nearby.

You can book Hazel for static use on Airbnb, but for those who prefer to take a trip, there is an additional charge.

Guests can stay a minimum of two nights for £ 67 per night, but availability does not begin until October.
