1 person killed, 12 injured in a shooting in Kroger in the Memphis region; dead suspect

COLLIERVILLE, Tennessee (WMC / Gray News) – One person died and 12 others were injured Thursday in a mass shooting at a Kroger grocery store in suburban Memphis, police said.

WMC reported Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said the suspected gunman was also dead, apparently from a self-inflicted injury.

The names of the suspect and the victims have not been made public.

Nine victims are at Regional One Hospital in Memphis, four of whom are in critical condition. Two victims are at the Methodist University Hospital and one at the Collierville Baptist Hospital.

A cashier said the gunman followed people as they ran for safety and shot both employees and customers.

Lane said the gunman’s vehicle was in the parking lot and that police are waiting for additional equipment to safely enter and search them. They first received a call regarding the shooting at 1:30 p.m. local time, and the first officer responded four minutes later, he said.

Police worked aisle after aisle to clear the store and remove employees and customers. We don’t think there is another suspect, Lane said.

First responders have sent the victims to nearby hospitals right now, and Lane said the number of victims may change as more information comes in.

Schools in Collierville sent an alert to parents earlier today and have taken the students to safety until police secure the scene.

The ATF along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies in the area are assisting the Collierville Police.
