In an email to Channel 11, Airbnb released the following statement:

“We share the Pittsburgh community’s outrage at this tragic gun violence. Our hearts go out to all those affected, including loved ones of those who lost their lives, injured victims and neighbours.

Airbnb strictly prohibits parties and we condemn the behavior that allegedly caused this criminal gun violence. The booking guest has been banned for life from Airbnb and we will review all legal options to hold this person accountable.

We have contacted the Pittsburgh Police Department as well as Mayor Gainey’s team to offer our support in their investigations, and we hope that those responsible for this bloodshed will be found quickly.

Airbnb told Channel 11 it was an unauthorized party that was held without the knowledge or consent of the host.

The property host clearly had rules that stated “No parties allowed, any evidence of partying will incur a $500 fee.” and “please observe the 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew,” according to Airbnb.

Airbnb also said users must be at least 18 to have an account with them.

“I mean it was a quick shot. It wasn’t just a little fire. [It was like]‘Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang,’” said Leonard Verdetto, who watched the 1:30 a.m. shoot from his house across the street.

“We looked out the window and people were running for the door and screaming, screaming, crying,” he said.

Police say 11 young revelers were shot and two were killed. Five other people were injured trying to escape.

“You’re on the second floor and you have to make a decision like ‘I’m going to jump out the second floor window and break through some glass’ and stuff like that. It’s just a really scary situation,” said Mitchell Wilston, who lives on the streets and captured video of the tragedy from his home surveillance camera.

In the video, you can see the crowd disperse as filming begins. One victim even used Wilston’s car for support.

“It looked like someone had run in that direction and then leaned against the back of our car, and there was just blood everywhere,” he said.

Verdetto owned the bar in front of the house which operates as an Airbnb and still lives behind the bar.

He saw the crowd of 200 youths queuing to enter the rental house hours before the shooting.

“The line went on and on and I said, ‘I don’t know how the hell they’re going to get all these people in there,'” he said.

Wilston said the house has been an Airbnb for about two years.

“It was never disruptive or a problem or anything like that,” he said. “There were never any ragers there or anything like that.”
