Airbnb guests sue host over hidden cameras and invasion of privacy
UPDATE
5:40 p.m. PT — An Airbnb spokesperson told TMZ… that the company strictly prohibits hidden cameras and that they immediately removed the host and property from their network after learning of the accusations.
UPDATE
Airbnb says its law enforcement operations team is working to help local police investigate the incident.
Hidden cameras in Airbnbs have been a hot issue lately, but apparently they’re nothing new — at least according to two tenants, who say they were illegally recorded by their host.
A couple are suing the host of an Airbnb rental property in Maine, claiming the guy installed a secret recording device in the master bedroom of an apartment they stayed in in 2020…which they fear could rolls during hanky-panky!
In the legal documents, obtained by TMZ, Kayla DeCristofaro and Ian Kelly say they rented a pad from a guy named Pierre Madden around mid-September in Westbrook, ME … only to learn later that the guy was later charged with seven counts of breaching privacy using an internal device.
The couple claim they had no knowledge of it at the time… not suspecting anything was wrong and carrying on with their stay as usual – including keeping busy in the bedroom, among other intimate moments during which they undressed and/or had fun private conversations.
Well, about a month later… DeCristofaro and Kelly claim they were contacted by local police, who they say informed them that Madden had a hidden camera in a clock radio in the bedroom… with a view full of bed, and apparently filming.
Both men say they were never made aware of the existence of Madden or Airbnb cameras, and insist they had a reasonable expectation of privacy in the home. They are suing Madden for breach of privacy and emotional distress.
Of course, that echoes a woman who last month claimed there were not-so-secret cameras littered around a Philly Airbnb rental — but the the company closed itclaiming that there was no truth in this matter … a conclusion, according to them, was drawn by the authorities.
