On July 9, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) received a call about a stolen car just after 1:30 p.m.

According to a statement, the person believed to be responsible for the theft has been identified as Giorgio Minnis, 34, and is the car owner’s nephew.

Minnis was allegedly armed and drove the car through the 5900 block of Hickory Hill Square to the home of another family member, police said.

Officers also received a call that Minnis was at the Hickory Hill Square location, where he fired a shot and threatened to harm those inside the house, said officials.

“A lot of crazy things happened,” said Theodis Fisher of Memphis. “The police can’t even do their job. It’s a terrible thing there. It’s just a lot of nonsense going on here all the time.

Police say officers arrived at the scene in the 5900 block of Hickory Hill Square and attempted to take Minnis into custody when he retrieved a handgun from his belt and allegedly shot one agents.

Minnis was later disarmed and taken into custody without injury.

An officer at the scene applied a tourniquet to the injured officer’s wound until paramedics arrived and the injured officer was taken to Regional Hospital One in critical condition, a statement said.

It was later upgraded to a critical but stable state.

“There’s always something going on here,” Fisher said. “Like this Family Dollar here. Police still up there. Someone always gets shot at the Citgo just across the street. I hate what happened. There’s a lot going on in these streets.

Minnis appeared in court on Monday. His bail was set at $1,080,000.

On Monday morning, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland told FOX13 how the injured officer was recovering.

Strickland said the officer is “better” and was alert and talking on Saturday.

He said police and firefighters are heroes because they risk their lives every day to protect the public.

Minnis is due back in court on Wednesday, where he could be named a public defender.
