Tides players left the field in Memphis; arrested shooting suspect

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Norfolk Tides and Memphis Redbirds players were taken off the field Wednesday night amid an active shooting situation in Memphis.

The Tides, who are currently in Memphis, and the Redbirds were expected to start Game 2 from a double header just as the active shooter situation began.

Sources told 10 On Your Side’s Craig Loper that the players were sheltering in place amid the incident. The shelter in place was lifted moments later and all players were allowed to leave the stadium.

In a subsequent social media post, the Memphis Redbirds announced that the doubleheader was on hold.

“It will resume tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. and will be a 7 inning match,” the tweet said. “The regularly scheduled match for Thursday September 8 will start approximately 30 minutes later, it will also be a 7 innings match.”

The shooting suspect Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was later taken into custody after several active shootings across Memphis. Local authorities said they received reports that he was logging his actions on Facebook.
