Italy celebrates women with Festa della Donna on March 8.
International Women’s Day, or Festa della Donna, is marked with events in Rome and across Italy on Tuesday, March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political and socio-economic achievements of women.
Women will have free access to Italian state museums and archaeological sites throughout the day, with many cultural events taking place in Rome, Milano and across Italy.
Recognized by the United Nations since 1977, the annual day is also a focal point of the women’s rights movement, drawing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women. .
There are demonstrations – organized by the feminist movement Non una di menotrade unions and other associations – taking place in cities across Italy on March 8.

In Rome, demonstrations will take place in Piazza della Repubblica from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in Piazza Madonna di Loreto, near Piazza Venezia, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
In Milan, a demonstration will take place at 9:00 a.m. in Largo Cairoli and again at 6:00 p.m. in Piazza Duca D’Aosta.
La Giornata Internazionale della Donna coincides with a nationwide general strike, affecting public transport across Italy, calling for an end to discrimination against women in the workplace.
The traditional gift for women during Italy’s Festa della Donna is the mimosa, with Italian florists selling around 12 million sprigs of the bright yellow flower each year.
