A deadly shooting on 21st Street in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — One person died in a double shooting on the east side, police say.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers have been dispatched to the 5800 block of East 21st Street. Dispatchers received several calls about the shooting beginning after 1 p.m., according to William Young, a public information officer for IMPD.

Police discovered that two men had been shot. One was pronounced dead at the scene, Young said. The coroner’s office later identified the man as 40-year-old Christopher L. Summers.

The second individual was “awake and breathing”, police said, and was taken to an area hospital.

Young said the IMPD does not have a suspect in custody at this time.

According to Young, the scene would be occupied for “a while” as police investigate the shooting and speak to any potential witnesses. The shooting happened in a busy area and police are hoping someone can provide them with additional information.

Young said police are still trying to piece together what led to the shooting, which investigators believe happened outside a home.
