Airbnb bans some users from booking New Year’s Eve stays

Airbnb has announced that it will tighten restrictions for travelers wishing to rent a property for the New Year as a way to stop “unauthorized parties”.

According to New York PostAirbnb users who do not have positive reviews or a history on their account will be barred from booking a one-night stay on December 31. The rule change applies to travelers in 11 countries, including the US, Canada, UK and more.

The company said it would also add tighter restrictions for inexperienced renters trying to book two- and three-night reservations over the New Year holidays, citing a focus on protecting against ‘neighborhood disturbances’. .

“Stays happen across the globe every night on Airbnb, with the overwhelming majority of guests and hosts being respectful of neighbors and providing benefits to their local community,” said Naba Banerjee, director of trust products and operations. from Airbnb.

“These proactive defenses will help promote responsible travel and prevent rare instances of unwanted behavior, and allow hosts, guests and communities to enjoy their holiday celebrations with added confidence,” continued Banerjee.

Airbnb officials said 340,000 users were “blocked or redirected” after trying to book a rental on Airbnb over New Year’s Eve 2020, of which around 120,000 were in America.

In June, Airbnb officials revealed that “parties and disruptive events” would be permanently banned after more than two years of temporary ban. The company also said party houses would be banned in the future.

Airbnb initially rolled out its party house ban in 2019 after five people were killed in a shooting on one of its reservations, and extended the order to all parties at properties around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Company officials said the temporary ban led to a 44% year-over-year drop in party reporting.
