Airbnb Host Explains Why He Gives Guests Minimal Instructions: ‘You’re Not A Housekeeper’

An Airbnb host is drawing praise after sharing his super-simple list of rules.

Jean Michel Thomas (@jamikeymike) posted on explanation to ICT Tac, where it has now attracted hundreds of thousands of views. Its “easy” list of payment instructions has just one step: close the door before you leave.

“Yes, that’s it, that’s all you have to do,” he said of the rule. “Close the door. Try to remember to lock it.

The video came in response to a comment from another TikTokerwho complained about the “horrendous” cleaning fees and complex payment rules they faced when using Airbnb.

In recent months, Airbnb customers have flooded TikTok with similar complaints. Earlier this year, a TikToker named Amanda (@amanda_wanders) claimed that she received a negative review from her host because she asked for extra toilet paper.

More recently, a user named Jet (@thefamousjet) posted a video poking fun at the hosts’ convoluted rules lists. the video was a parody, but it immediately sparked thousands of complaints from Airbnb guests, many of whom said Jet wasn’t exaggerating.

“Fr, we pay $500 to $600 to keep someone’s house apartment for 2 nights,” one commenter wrote.

“At this point we should all be heading back to the hotel,” added another.

Thomas’ video, meanwhile, garnered praise for the same reason Jet’s video garnered so much anger. At the end of his clip, he directly challenged the hosts who complicate the task for their guests.

“You are on vacation,” he said. “You are not a cleaning lady. Hosts who do these chores drive me crazy.

Airbnb’s website has a guide for use by hosts when developing their check-in and check-out procedures. Above all, the service suggests that hosts be extremely clear when defining cleaning rules, check-out times, and lockout instructions.

“For some hosts, checking out simply means asking guests to close the door behind them and enjoy their trip. residence. Other hosts leave detailed instructions for tidying up. Whatever your accommodation styleensuring your guest payment expectations are clearly communicated is key to ending their stay on a high note,” the post read in part.

Still, many commenters on Thomas’ video agreed with his sentiment – wondering why guests should be asked to clean up at all.

“Imagine that you are going to a Hotelthen make you clean the room like a pro before you leave,” one user wrote.

“I could never figure out the over $150 cleaning fee!” another accepted. “Why do I have to clean before I leave if I’m paying to have it cleaned?!?”

According to vacation rental software company iGMS, the average Airbnb cleaning fee is approximately $65 per booking. However, for larger properties and hosts who hire outside cleaning help, the average cost is $105.
