Airbnb introduces anti-party tech to crack down on bustling vacationers

Airbnb will block hosts from seeing the names of American guests before reservations are accepted in an effort to combat racism on the booking site.

Airbnb has introduced new anti-party tools to help identify potentially high-risk bookings and prevent them from making reservations.

The system will look at factors such as positive review history (or lack thereof), how long the guest has been on Airbnb, length of trip, distance to listing, and location. time of the week when people travel.

The main objective of the tool, which will be launched in the United States and Canada, is to try to reduce the ability of bad actors to organize “unauthorized parties”, which have an impact on hosts, neighbors and communities, Airbnb said.

A similar variant of this system has been tested in Australia since October 2021, which the firm says has been “very effective”.

In June, the travel rental company announced that a previously temporary Covid-19-induced party ban would become a permanent, codified policy.

More than 6,600 guests were suspended worldwide last year by Airbnb for attempting to violate this ban.

However, Airbnb said there had been a 63% drop in party reporting in the UK since the ban was introduced.
