An Airbnb in Ontario was ransacked by a tenant and they left $50,000 in damages

Many people rent out their properties on Airbnb for extra money, but they usually expect a light cleanup afterward, not $50,000 in damages.

Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) told Narcity they were investigating damage to an Airbnb property in Burlington last week.

The tenant allegedly caused damage to the Airbnb on Old York Road from December 11 to 17, and in just six days they managed to wreak an impressive amount of havoc.

The tenant allegedly ripped out the security camera, damaged furniture and light fixtures, smashed glass door frames, damaged the pool table and more.

HRPS said damages totaled an estimated $50,000.

“Investigators are reviewing the tenancy agreement and investigating the person(s) who rented the residence,” an HRPS spokesperson said.

No arrests were made and police said they would not release descriptions of the suspect or suspects.

Airbnb reimburses hosts for up to $3 million in damages, according to their website, so the property owner may be able to be reimbursed for expensive repairs.

“Airbnb reimburses you for damages caused by travelers to your home and property, and includes these specialized protections,” says the website.

Specialized protections include damage from pets, damaged artwork and valuables, deep cleaning needs, and even loss of income if a host has to cancel future reservations due to damage caused by a traveler.
