Bali, Thailand, among Airbnb’s top 20 places for remote work

On Airbnb’s list of 20 destinations in its Live and Work Anywhere initiative, only two in Asia made the cut: Bali, Indonesia and Thailand.

The choice of Bali and Thailand in Asia is unsurprising – these are the two places that regularly feature on many lists of the best places for digital nomads.

The other 18 are Baja California Sur, Mexico; Brindisi, Puglia, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Caribbean; Canary Islands, Spain; Cape Town, South Africa; Colombia, Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy; Lisbon, Portugal; Malta; Mexico City, Mexico; Palm Springs, California, USA; Queensland, Australia; rural France; Salzkammergut, Austria; Tampa Bay, Florida, USA and Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

These are the 20 destinations in which Airbnb says it will partner with DMOs “to make it easier to live and work anywhere” under its Live and Work Anywhere Initiative.

He says: “Over the next few months, we will be working closely with each organization to create dedicated hubs tailored to their destination, showcasing the best of local long-stay listings as well as important information relating to the conditions of entry and tax policies. . We will also partner with destinations for educational campaigns to promote responsible accommodation and travel as a remote worker. Destination Centers are expected to launch later this year.

“Destinations range from entire countries to smaller, lesser-known cities and were selected based on their appeal to remote workers and the progressiveness of policy changes for those looking to live and work in a different region and attract a new type of traveller.”

He cited his own data. “About one in five guests said they used Airbnb to work remotely while traveling in 2021, a trend that continued into the first quarter of 2022, with long-term stays at an all-time high, more than doubling from compared to the first quarter of 2019. They’re essentially “living” on Airbnb as guests have already planned stays in more than 72,000 cities and towns this summer.

He said that since co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky tell the employees they could work from anywhere, “we had over a million hits on our careers page, making people want to live and work anywhere.”

Speaking of lists, four cities in Asia are among the top 10 most expensive places for expats this year, according to the Mercer Cost of Living Index 2022. The report, which highlights the impact of rising costs of living and worsening macroeconomic trends on the expat market, puts Hong Kong in the lead. Singapore, Tokyo and Beijing closed the list at eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

Switzerland took second to fifth place with Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern respectively, followed by Tel Aviv, Israel and New York.
