Bangkok was the top trending destination for Airbnb customers globally in the first nine months of 2022, according to the shared accommodation platform.

The finding was based on searches conducted on Airbnb from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 for check-ins in 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, the company said.

The top 10 trending destinations in 2022 included: 1) Bangkok, 2) Sydney, 3) Malaga, Spain, 4) Seoul, 5) Melbourne, 6) Itapema, Brazil, 7) Angra dos Reis, Brazil, 8) Capão da Canoa, Brazil, 9) Auckland and 10) Brisbane, Australia.

Bangkok’s popularity continues in 2023, as searches from January 1 to September 30, 2022 for future registrations in 2023 ranked the Thai capital fifth, behind Málaga, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland in that order.

“In 2022, we continued to see changes in the way people live, work and travel on Airbnb,” said Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s general manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

“It is clear that the new flexibility offered by remote and hybrid working has led to a revolution in the way we travel, especially when it comes to international destinations.

“The reopening of more countries this year has also unlocked pent-up demand from international travelers eager to reconnect with loved ones or visit their favorite destinations again.”

Airbnb also flagged the top five 2022 travel categories on its platform for Thai customers, based on bookings from May 11 to September 30: Amazing Pools, National Parks, Beach, Tropical and Shared Homes.

The most popular international destination searches for Thai travelers in 2022 were Seoul; Bern, Switzerland; Singapore; Valais, Switzerland; and Ile-de-France, France.
