Best Gelato in Athens, giving Rome a run for its money
Evi Papadopoulou is a classically trained chef who studied at the culinary school of renowned Italian pastry chef Iginio Massari and received specialized training in artisanal gelato making at the prestigious laboratory of Francesco Palmieri in Puglia, Italy.
In 2014, Papadopoulou opened Le Grece, an ice cream shop tucked away on Mitropoleos Street, just off Syntagma Square. The lovely shop itself has received rave reviews and is considered the best ice cream shop in Athens, with locals, tourists and food critics saying it gives Rome a run for its money!
Carefully selected ingredients are key to their success, as ricotta comes from Crete, dried figs from Kalamata, raisins from Corinth, honey from the Cyclades, fresh milk and strained Greek yogurt from local farms, eggs from Megara, sour cherries from Macedonia, lemons and melons from Argos, oranges from Laconia and sweet wines from the islands of Lemnos and Santorini. And of course there are also ingredients from Italy, the Kings of Gelato!
Quality for Le Grece means no artificial additives, no margarine or coloring and only fresh seasonal fruit, the best chocolate in the world and an awareness of the nutritional value of their products.
Don’t leave without tasting their new ice cream sandwiches and we assure you that you will certainly want to return to taste all their flavors!
