Boston radio legend Bob Raleigh has died

A Boston radio legend has died.

Bob Raleigh, who spent more than 23 years at WBZ-AM, died last Friday at the age of 87. The announcement was made by family members and WBZ-AM on social media.

Raleigh was known as the longtime overnight host on WBZ, with a freewheeling schedule that featured fun segments such as trivia (with a free WBZ pen as a prize) and psychics giving free readings to live callers on the waves.

Raleigh joined WBZ in 1975, coming from competitor WHDH to take charge of the noon shift. In 1980 he was transferred to the night slot before returning to midday in 1984, then back to nights before retiring in 1999.

He also had a stint as a traffic reporter on WBZ’s “Maynard in the Morning,” Boston’s #1 morning show with host Dave Maynard.

Before coming to Boston, Raleigh had worked at WPGC-AM, WWDC-AM and WEEL-AM, all in Washington, DC. When he left WPGC, the then GM would have preferred to keep the same names on the air even when people left, so two other people took on the name “Bob Raleigh” after he left for Boston.

Raleigh was married to his beloved Mary Lou before his death in 2018.
