Bournemouth’s BH2 in pictures as it turns five

The BOURNEMOUTH BH2 opened its doors five years ago this week.

The leisure complex on the site of the old Exeter Road bus station is home to many restaurants, cinemas and mini-golf.

Here we go back to when BH2 was built and how the site looked before.

The site was used as an NCP car park before the construction of BH2.

The former Bournemouth Council intended to secure a compulsory purchase order for the site and build a bus station in the town center but these were later abandoned.

When it opened in 2017, the BH2 multiplex was touted as “Odeon’s most innovative cinema in the UK”.

Speaking to the Echo at the time, Carol Welch, Managing Director of Odeon UK and Ireland, said: “This is currently our only cinema to showcase all of these new features in one place.

“In 10 years they will be commonplace across the country – so we are delighted to be bringing them all to our customers in Bournemouth first.”

Eight of the multiplex’s 10 screens have electronically-controlled reclining seats.

The largest of the cinema screens is in the iSense auditorium and measures 16.9 m by 7.19 m (55 ft by 23 ft). The auditorium features an immersive Dolby Atmos sound system with 56 speakers.

For moviegoers, the opening of the flagship Odeon was the most memorable occasion since the city’s two Westover Road cinemas reopened as dual-screen theaters in 1969-70.

Last week, popular brewery BrewDog became the latest chain to open inside BH2.

It offers a 50% plant-based menu and 30 taps of draft beer.

And last year, Slim Chickens opened a branch on the site.
