Cambly raises $60 million in funding

camblya San Francisco, Calif.-based one-to-one video chat app that connects English learners with native English tutors has raised $60 million in venture capital.

The round was led by Benchmark and Bessemer Venture Partners with participation from Katrina Lake (founder and former CEO of Stitch Fix), Nathan Blecharczyk (co-founder of Airbnb), Michael Siebel (partner at Y Combinator), Ryan Petersen ( founder and CEO of Flexport) and Ben Silbermann (co-founder and CEO of Pinterest).

The company intends to use the funds to expand its operations and business reach.

Launched in 2014 by Sameer Shariff, CEO, Cambly is a marketplace that matches students who want to learn English with the right English tutor based on a few key factors such as profession, interests, time zone, gender, mother tongue and personality. Students pay subscription fees to access the service, and tutors are paid for the time they spend talking with students. All language sessions are accessible directly on a computer or with the mobile application. Cambly is now used in over 150 countries.

The company is based in San Francisco with teams in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Istanbul (Turkey), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Shanghai (China), Seoul (Korea), Tokyo (Japan), Bangalore (India), Berlin (Germany) and Paris (France).
