Chaplain Arvid A. Harklau, 89, of Lima, Ohio, died Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at St. Rita Medical Center. He was born April 29, 1933 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to the late Albert and Helen (Barta) Harklau. He married Elaine Schroeder on September 1, 1956, and she survives in Lima.

Arvid earned a master’s degree in theology from Luther Seminary, served as a chaplain at Iowa State Hospital, and a year at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He had 16 years of parish experience, 19 years as a chaplain mainly at the Lima Correctional Institute, then eight years as an acting pastor in various congregations. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Cridersville, Ohio.

Additional survivors include a son, Peter (Tracey) Harklau of Lima; his daughters, Stephanie (Jason) Shamroski of Rockledge, Fla., and Michelle Harklau of Columbus; three grandchildren, Diana, Kevin and Samantha; and one brother, Lanny (Sharon) Harklau of Stillwater, Minn.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, November 14 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. The funeral will follow at noon, with pastors Sam Payne and Robert ‘Bob’ Gibson officiating.
