Connecticut’s Berlin Fair Opens September 15: Here’s What You Need to Know
The 73rd edition of the Berlin Fair will open Thursday evening with a bang, literally.
It’s because when the agricultural fair — which circulates Berlin Exhibition Center from Sept 15-18 – opens Thursday night, it will kick off with a demolition derby show. During the derby, the cars enter a ring and attempt to destroy each other. The first winner of the derby will win $2,000, the second will win $1,000 and the third will win $500, according to Sky Fire Productions.
The derby starts at 7 p.m., and the fair recommends guests arrive early to secure a good seat.
Brand new to the event this year is the Space Adventures Thrill Show, which aims to “excite and educate” guests with performers walking on walls and riding motorcycles outside and inside a giant globe, according to its webpage. The show takes place every day of the fair, according to its program of events.
For animal lover in attendance there are staging competitions for cattle, poultry, rabbits and sheep during the fair. They can also watch the Puppy Pals Comedy Stunt Showwhich runs every day of the fair and features adopted and rescued dogs performing tricks and “breathtaking feats”.
Commercial food vendors including Amy’s Sweets, The dough houseGet Roasted, LLC, Just the tips Steak and Thai Taste will be selling food at the fair this year. There’s also a blueberry pie tasting contest on Friday. Customers can wash down their food with beverages from brands such as Counterbalance Brewing Co., twisted tea and Michelob Ultra in a beer pavilion.
The fair will also include a barn displaying vintage tractors, some over 100 years old. Children can play with toy tractors in a corn pit. The “Cow Town Museum” allows visitors to get up close to the cows, allowing them to milk their own cows and try their hand at making butter and ice cream.
Of course, the traditional carnival rides will also be part of the Berlin Fair. Customers will find a carousel and Ferris wheel, as well as more “exhilarating” and “thrilling” rides, such as “Spaceship 2000” and “Himalaya”. According to its website, there are also prizes up for grabs for the basketball free throw and dart throw challenge.
“We have all the old-fashioned things that make a little fair like ours fun,” said Berlin Fair secretary Debra Tubbs. “We have things for everyone to come in and have fun.”
The fair has a concert stage, where musical acts like Rave On, Jordan Flecher, Waste bullets, mac daddy rock band, Locomotion and John Street Band will perform.
“We do different bands every year, so it’s not the same,” Tubbs said.
Tickets for Thursdays are on sale for $10 (and $15 for those who want to see the Demolition Derby), $15 ($10 for seniors) Friday through Sunday, and $35 ($25 for seniors) for the entire duration of the event.
A two-pack wristband offering unlimited carnival rides is on sale for $55 and a two-pack is on sale for $99, according to its website.
