Dalkeith Apprentice Wins National Printing Industry Award

Print Scotland, the trade association and voice of the Scottish graphic communications industry, has recognized four outstanding young apprentices in its seventh annual Scottish Printing Apprentice of the Year awards.

Craig Knight of FLB Group, Dalkeith, has been named Postpress Apprentice of the Year. A highlight of his learning was working with and learning from experienced operators.

He said, “One of the most important things is having careful attention to detail to produce our products to the required standards. In particular, I remember being proud to have had the opportunity to work on work done for Harrods, the internationally renowned department store in London.

“My ambition is to continue to learn my job and to evolve in my role. And I would recommend a printing apprenticeship to others. It’s a good industry to work in and very interesting to see all the processes involved in the production of printed products.

The awards are part of Print Scotland’s mission to represent the Scottish printing community and to raise the profile of future industry leaders. Director Garry Richmond said: “We continue to believe that the industry needs to employ more apprentices to support the printing industry in Scotland. Our approach is to do this by encouraging more apprentices from increasingly diverse backgrounds.

“These awards recognize the outstanding achievements of young people who represent the next generation of our printing industry leaders in Scotland.

“Print Scotland’s sincere thanks go, once again, to our sponsors David McGinlay of Muller Martini and Stephen Paul of Antalis for providing the prizes.

“I would also like to once again express our gratitude to Jim McKenzie of Ultimate Learning Solutions who has done a tremendous job in his new role as Appraiser of the Learning Fellowship Program.”

Jim said: “It is a great pleasure to be part of the work-based apprenticeship program which allows young people to learn a trade and basic skills that will last them a lifetime.”

Susan Graham, President of Print Scotland, congratulated the winners and wished them a successful career as the industry leaders of tomorrow.

She said: “Once again we salute these outstanding young apprentice printers and continue to celebrate their achievements in building future-proof skills to drive the Scottish printing industry forward.

“The printing industry in Scotland has a real future across a range of skills and needs a steady stream of high quality, motivated apprentices in even greater numbers, and from a wider range of in more diverse backgrounds, to realize its potential.

Print Scotland provides training for modern apprentices through the Scottish Training Scheme, which provides a grant from the Scottish Government to cover the cost of training. It also provides a range of Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) as well as a Modern Apprenticeship Certification (MA).
