Fetch! Golden Retriever lands home run for New York Mets star
Tuesday night was “Bark in the Bark” night at Citi Field. The dogs and their loving owners were scattered around the stadium for the penultimate game of the regular season. A four-legged friend stole the hearts of fans and a special home run early in the game.
After an early home run by New York Mets teammate Brandon Nimmo, shortstop Francisco Lindor threw the first pitch he saw toward the upper deck. According to MLB.com, the ball was headed for a pair of golden retrievers named Renegade and Doak. “Lindor hits the home run. I see it coming and I guess my father instincts kicked in,” Doak owner Chris Howland told MLB.com.
Naturally, Howland knew that dogs couldn’t really defend themselves. “It was literally fine for the dogs. I don’t need them getting a 110 mph baseball in the stomach. So, I reached out to my girlfriend, she bumped my finger, hit the seat and landed on the floor. We fight for it. I found it and gave it to the dog. Wow, a big baseball star hits a home run and you don’t want the ball?
“The moment I was like, ‘It’s way funnier if I give him (the ball),'” Howland said. MLB.com. “So I handed it to him and he was cool about it, right? He clung to it, chewed it. They’re both obsessed with balls to begin with, so one of them was going to take it. I don’t think Lindor wants his memory of the 26th Circuit, at least now.
