handcrafted hobbit house listings on airbnb in ‘the shire’ upstate new york

a New York-style hobbit hole

An Airstream motorhome meets an idyllic English cottage in upstate New York’s version of “the County” on Airbnb. The tiny dwelling is located in the Catskills hamlet of Lake Kenoza, just three hours from town, and is the third cabin on the 97-acre farm. The ‘hobbit’ style cottage is built with its own wood-fired sauna, which is wrapped in the same shingle sheathing and echoes the characteristic archway of the smaller main house.

The unique, handcrafted cottage has been listed on Airbnb’s OMG! category – a curated collection of the most original homes around the world available to stay on the platform.

Available for a stay on Airbnb (see here), The Shire’s small cabin is said to occupy an “English garden-like setting”, overlooking a rolling meadow and fern-covered woods. Inside, the dwelling has the capacity to sleep four, housing a queen bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and dining area that can be converted into a second queen size bed. Outside, visitors have a fire pit and a private barbecue.

The owners explain that visitors to the cottage are free to access the renovated three-story main barn nearby, as well as a canoe and kayak for use on the property’s ponds or Lake Kenoza, unless 10 minutes by car.
